I think it’s fair to say that January and I generally don’t get on.
To be honest, I’m not sure if many people really do like this month. Anyone?
Christmas is over which is just sad. Various money pressures are around (why does tax season come right after major spending season?) and no matter how well you’ve planned it feels bad. It’s dark and it’s cold. At least February has the good graces to be a bit shorter than the other months, just to make you feel better about it! Oh, and I pretty much always get a really bad cold – or actual flu last year – right after the New Year. All in all, joy.
Okay, okay, I’m going to stop moaning now. You can uncover your eyes. This January has actually been quite bearable so far (although it has felt like a very long month nevertheless). In fact, it’s been thoroughly busy in terms of work and study and, contrary to what might be expected, that’s suited me incredibly well.
The beginning of the month saw two large essays due for my university course and, for all I might have felt like my brain was dripping out of my eyes at points, having that kind of focus seems to have given me back a zest for study that had faded over the first weeks of my course here for various reasons and never really reappeared. I feel more myself than I have in a long time, so full of energy, full of ideas, and excited about academia once again. I can’t put into words how happy this makes me. I should probably be completely honest and give thanks to Charlotte, Elinor, Rowan, Kim, and Nene for their various forms of assistance in terms of ensuring my sanity (and giving gaming advice in some cases!) when those inevitable things did go wrong!
Oh, talking of people helping me to find my direction a bit, I also owe Kim a massive thank you for being such a fun human being in general but especially as a thoroughly enjoyable fangirling session with her may well have spawned ideas for the dissertation. Still got a bit of working out to do but I’m excited to get going with that now!
As for the rest of the month, I’m going up to Birmingham for a few days to stay with the parents and get a few admin tasks done to boot. I’m looking forward to being up there… tomorrow’s journey to get there… not so much! But, y’know, it’s January. It can’t all be fun and games else where would its reputation as my least favourite month be?
